With the advent of combinatorial chemistry, the formylation of aromatic aldehydes constitutes an important transformation toward the synthesis of compound libraries. Indeed, a protocol for the Vilsmeier–Haack reaction has been developed for the synthesis of indoles 15 that are suitable for solid-phase synthesis (Scheme 9).
