As well as the important and well-known two-carbon-atom elongating procedures for aldehydes, such as aldol condensations, Wittig reactions, and Peterson alkenations, three other approaches are known. These additional methods are covered in this section, together with an efficient means by which Grignard reagents are combined with an electrophilic four-carbon unit, to afford 2-enals after hydrolysis of the addducts.
