Oxone, a sulfur-based oxidant used in the conversion of alcohols into carbonyl compounds, is a stable salt consisting of potassium hydrogenperoxomonosulfate (KHSO5), potassium hydrogensulfate, and potassium sulfate in 2:1:1 molar ratio. For the oxidation of alcohols, however, the presence of a catalyst is required. An example is 2,2,6,6-tetrameth­ylpiperidin-1-oxyl with tetrabutylammonium bromide as an additive that can be used in the conversion of 1-cyclohexylethanol into 1-cyclohexylethanone (127) (Scheme 86).[‌352‌] When 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidin-1-oxyl is replaced with tris[(2-oxazolinyl)phenolato]manganese(III) (10mol%), the oxidation can be carried out in a two-phase system consisting of water and dichloromethane.[‌353‌] The reaction times are very short (5min) and the yields are good.
