Platinum(II) salts catalyze the hydration of electron-rich alkynes,[20,21] and platinum(IV) under a slightly positive pressure of carbon monoxide is an extremely efficient and selective catalyst for the hydration of aliphatic, as well as aromatic alkynes (Scheme 6).[22] Terminal alkynes are converted into the methyl ketones, following Markovnikov's rule, and nonsymmetrical alkynes with bulky substituents give only the ketones 5 in which the carbonyl group is remote from the bulky moiety. The reaction can be run under phase-transfer conditions in dichloroethane, or under homogeneous conditions in wet tetrahydrofuran.
