Azaspiropentanes 110, formed similarly to oxaspiropentanes by addition of phenyl azide to methylenecyclopropanes, undergo acid, thermally, or photolytically induced ring expansion into cyclobutanimines 111 in high yields (Scheme 42).[99] Acid-catalyzed hydrolysis of cyclobutanimines 111 quantitatively yields the corresponding cyclobutanones 112 (Scheme 42).[99]
