Irradiation of cyclobutane-1,3-dione 6[27] in methanol or ethanol at 40–75°C provides the cyclopropanone methyl and ethyl hemiacetals 35 (R1 = Me, Et) respectively, in 55–80% yields (Scheme 13).[58,59]
