Methods for the syntheses of α-hydroxy ketones from alkenes are limited to oxidations with zinc(II) permanganate supported on silica gel,[‌196‌] or potassium permanganate in presence of copper(II) sulfate.[‌197‌] The use of 2-methylpropanal and oxygen in the presence of osmium(VIII) oxide and bis(3-methypentane-2,4-dionato)nickel(II) catalyst as an efficient oxidative system is also described.[‌198‌] A more recent method employs an aqueous solution of ruthenium(III) chloride and peracetic acid.[‌199‌]
