The reaction of anions of oxophosphine oxides with carbonyl compounds to deliver enones via a Horner–Wittig reaction has been remarkably underused. One application has been in the synthesis of unsaturated β-oxo esters such as 198 (Nazarov reagents), which are useful building blocks in Robinson annulations and heterocyclic synthesis and can be accessed directly from enals by treatment with the dianions of β-oxo ester phosphine oxides 197 (Scheme 38).[175]
