Sulfonium salts that cannot be deprotonated to give an ylide can, in certain cases, be transformed into ylides by a “ligand-exchange” process (Scheme 58). Hence, a sulfonium salt bearing a leaving group 107 can be converted into a sulfonium ylide 99 by a nucleophilic carbanion 108.
