Certain sulfonium salts bearing alkyl-chain substituents of greater than two carbons in length, can, in basic media, undergo α′,β-elimination reactions or Hoffmann elimination to give alkenes. This is provided that a syn-periplanar arrangement of the reactive C—H and C—S bonds can be attained (Scheme 100).[239]
