The addition of radicals derived from the decarboxylation of carboxylic acids to quinones has been reported using the persulfate method of radical generation.[‌1‌] Thus, 2-methyl- and 2-ethylbenzo-1,4-quinone (2, R1=Me, Et) are synthesized in 55 and 82% yield, respectively, by oxidative decarboxylation of the corresponding carboxylic acids with silver persulfate in the presence of benzo-1,4-quinone (1) (Scheme 1).[‌2‌] 2-Hex-5-enylbenzo-1,4-quinone [2, R1=(CH2)4CH=CH2] is similarly synthesized in 82% yield by the silver(I)-catalyzed oxidation of hept-6-enoic acid with benzo-1,4-quinone (1) in the presence of persulfate.[‌3‌]
