The standard procedure for the preparation of 1,1-diiodoethane 128 involves an interesting exchange reaction in which 1,1-dichloroethane 127 is converted into the desired product 128 in the presence of aluminum trichloride with iodoethane as the iodine source (Scheme 52).[278] The same transformation can also be achieved with aluminum triiodide in carbon disulfide.[279]
