The reaction of 1,2,4-trioxolanes with methanol in the presence of chlorosulfonic acid gives good yields of carbonyl compounds, formed via the corresponding α-methoxy hydroperoxides.[‌353‌] The furan endoperoxides 287 afford the Δ2-butenolides 288 after thermal rearrangement at 35°C in basic solvents such as acetone, methanol, tetrahydrofuran, or dimethylformamide (Scheme 124).[‌302‌] On the other hand, the epoxides 289 and 290 are obtained in apolar solvents. The formation of the butenolide 288 is achieved in better yields if the reaction is carried out at a lower temperature (1822°C) and in acetone as solvent.[‌354‌] It can be demonstrated by NMR spectroscopy that the reaction takes place through the rearrangement of 287 into the dioxetane 291, which leads to dimeric peroxides as immediate precursors of 5-(hydroperoxy)butenolides that afford the butenolide 288 after hydrolytic workup.[‌355‌]
