General Introduction
Functional groups possessing an sp3-hybridized carbon bonded to both sulfur and nitrogen, for example the α-amino sulfur derivatives 1, are known as S,N-acetals. The S—C—N function may form part of a ring structure to generate a large number of heterocyclic systems 2, which are, for example, found in the sulfur-containing bicyclic β-lactams penam (3) and cepham (4) (Scheme 1).
