Insertion of a nitro substituent on an aromatic ring in place of a halogen can be achieved by nucleophilic aromatic substitution using S,S-diphenylsulfimide, followed by oxidation of the intermediate using 3-chloroperoxybenzoic acid (Scheme 166).[512] Using this method, substituted benzenes and also pyridines (e.g., the preparation of 200), pyrazines, pyrimidines, and 1,3,5-triazines are nitrated.
