Arenediazonium salts can be used to provide photosensitive thin films that are deposited on plates and used in lithography. Such films consist of a mixture of “diazo” and binder resins that when exposed to light copolymerize to generate an insoluble cross-linked polymer, whereas areas of the film that do not receive light are unaffected. When leached with a suitable solvent, the unexposed areas of the film are removed leaving an impression of the image in the form of the insoluble polymer.[52,137,138] The chemistry involved is summarized in Scheme 44, where the diazo resin 109 and the binder resin 110 are intimately associated before photoirradiation causes the formation of a polymer 111. The photoelectric properties of these thin films have also been exploited in the development of photovoltaic cells.[139]
