Since aryl amides are very common building blocks and can be very effectively synthesized by various methods, they represent a useful starting material for the synthesis of mono- or dialkylated arylamines. The simplest approach is the reduction of, for example, N-phenylacetamide to N-ethylaniline (164) using sodium borohydride in acidic dimethyl sulfoxide (Scheme 182).[333]
