General Introduction

The simplest monoarylhydrazines are derived from hydrazine by substitution of one hydrogen atom with an aryl group. Further substitution of the remaining three hydrogen atoms with alkyl or aryl groups leads to di-, tri-, or tetrasubstituted arylhydrazines. The names of substituted hydrazines can be derived from hydrazine or diazane; the term diazene has also been used. The two nitrogen atoms are specified as N1 and N2 or as N and N. 1,2-Disubstituted hydrazines are frequently called hydrazo compounds. In this section the names are based on hydrazine and the nitrogen atoms are numbered, if needed, for unambiguity. A separate subsection is devoted to each of the 15 subclasses within this product class (Scheme 1). The product class covers arylhydrazines and derivatives in which the hydrazine group is not part of a cycle. Hetarene-substituted hydrazines are included when their preparation illustrates a new approach. The review covers the literature up to mid-2006. All significant synthetic methods are presented, but only the most important classical methods are discussed in detail.
