Ruthenium(VIII) oxide, generated in situ from ruthenium(III) chloride and sodium periodate, is a powerful oxidant for various classes of organic substrate. Alkanes 22 containing tertiary CH bonds are readily converted into the corresponding tertiary alcohols 23 (Table 6),[‌75‌‌77‌] whereas simple cyclic alkanes are oxidized further to give ketones[‌78‌,‌79‌] or (with CC bond cleavage) dicarboxylic acids.[‌78‌]
