The work of Barbier was inspired by the early development of zinc chemistry by Saytzeff at the end of the 19th century. He described the preparation of alcohols such as 10 from carbonyl compounds, by the in situ formation of the organomagnesium reagent in a solution containing the carbonyl derivatives, and where the halide is added last (Scheme 10).[40] This method is now regarded as a useful alternative to a standard Grignard reaction.
