Although O-alkyloximes (oxime ethers) are as easily prepared from carbonyl compounds as are oximes themselves, the indirect reductive sequence of aldehyde/ketone to O-alkyloxime to amine has been used almost exclusively for the asymmetric synthesis of primary amines. The first such results were obtained by boronate or aluminate reduction of oxime ethers bearing a stereogenic center on the O-alkyl group (Scheme 27, route a), whereas newer research focuses on employing chiral catalysts (Scheme 27, route b).[50]
