Previously published information on this product class can be found in Houben–Weyl, Vol. 11/2, pp 591–640; Vol. E14b, pp 210–221; Vol. E16a, pp 997–1051; and Vol. E19b, pp 895, 896, 1581, 1582. Members of this product class are often soluble in water and quaternary ammonium salts are good electrolytes; some are used in detergents and in other cleaning agents. Quaternary ammonium salts may produce acidic, basic, or neutral solutions depending on the nature of the anion or the cation.
