The synthesis of compounds containing several quaternary ammonium centers from polyhalides and tertiary amines is normally straightforward, although in some cases mixtures of compounds are obtained. For example, the success of reactions that rely upon the N-alkylation of compounds containing two tertiary amino functions may depend on the size and type of the N-substituents as well as the distance between the two nitrogen atoms.
