General Introduction

Nitroalkanes have been known since the earliest days of organic chemistry and the simpler members, particularly nitromethane and nitroethane, are useful as highly polar aprotic solvents. Nitromethane is also now accepted as the best reference for 14N and 15N NMR spectroscopy. Caution should be exercised in handling all nitroalkanes, but particularly those in which the nitro groups make up a high proportion of the molecular weight, since they are potentially explosive and should not generally be distilled or heated in the pure state without appropriate safety precautions.
