In the Henry reaction, a nitroalkane anion adds to a carbonyl group to give a 2-nitro alcohol.[‌521‌] The reaction is also called the nitroaldol reaction. Nitromethane, nitroethane, and 2-nitropropane react with formaldehyde. Multiple alkylations occur when the nitroalkane is primary or secondary and sufficient carbonyl compound is used (Scheme 180).[‌522‌]
