Nitrosoalkanes are often considered to be too unstable for practical use, yet they find many applications in synthetic chemistry. In several cases, the unstable nitrosoalkanes generated in situ are used for further conversion into other functional groups, but useful reagents having a nitrosoalkane subunit are also widely applied. The typical blue color of monomeric nitrosoalkanes often indicates their formation or determines the end of the reaction. However, it is not only monomeric nitrosoalkanes that are of interest. The dimers (azo dioxides) are in some cases converted in situ into their monomers, thus providing a stable source of nitrosoalkanes for further elaboration.
