Formation of the N—N bond by nitrosation of secondary amines is by far the most frequently used preparative access to N-nitrosoamines. Active agents for nitrosation are dinitrogen tetroxide, nitrosyl halides, and salts containing the nitrosonium cation. Although some methods use these reagents directly, the generation in situ from sodium nitrite is more convenient and the most important method for nitrosation. Furthermore, alkyl nitrites can be used for the transfer of nitroso groups.
