Dialkylazoxy compounds are more stable than their corresponding diazene derivatives. For example, 2,2′-azobisisobutyronitrile decomposes at 80°C, whereas the azoxy analogue is stable up to 180°C.[135] In contrast to dialkyldiazenes, no radicals are formed upon irradiation of azoxy compounds in solution; however, several degradation reactions, including deoxygenation to the corresponding azoalkanes, are observed.
