Dialkyl hydrogen phosphates represent a very broad class of organophosphorus compounds. They are extremely resistant to hydrolysis, the C—O scission having a half-life of about 130 000 years at pH 7 and 25°C.[86] This stability makes the phosphate diester well-suited to linking the nucleosides of DNA to store genetic information. The chemical stability of phosphate diesters relative to the reactivity of triesters is useful in the synthesis of dialkyl/diaryl hydrogen phosphates.
