The FritschButtenbergWiechell reaction can also be carried out photochemically.[‌92‌,‌93‌] The reaction works with chlorides, bromides, and iodides as well, but with varying yields. Best results for the production of diphenylacetylene (54) are obtained with the dichloride 53 (X=Cl) (Scheme 22).[‌92‌] 1,1-Diphenylethene (55) and the dimer 1,1,4,4-tetraphenylbuta-1,3-diene (56) are formed as byproducts.
