The metal-mediated or metal-catalyzed cycloaddition of 2 molar equivalents of an alkyne and 1 equivalent of an alkene is potentially the simplest and most powerful method for the construction of cyclohexa-1,3-dienes (Scheme 18). The generality of this process was demonstrated early on using cobalt complexes as chemical mediators for the syntheses of natural products (see Section 46.5.2.6).[‌53‌] Since then several other metals have been used and the topic has been the subject of several reviews;[‌54‌‌60‌] see also Science of Synthesis, Vol. 1 [Compounds with Transition MetalCarbon π-Bonds and Compounds of Groups 108 (Ni, Pd, Pt, Co, Rh, Ir, Fe, Ru, Os) (Section 1.4)].
