There are a variety of methods for preparing 1,3-dienes having two exocyclic double bonds; these include alkenation reactions, alkene metathesis, metal-mediated coupling reactions, and cycloisomerizations. Here a selection of metal-mediated transformations of acyclic diynes or enynes into 1,2-bis(alkylidene)cycloalkanes are considered; however, processes starting from the carbometalation or hydrometalation of the acetylenic bonds, followed by cyclization and reductive elimination, are excluded as they are included in Section 46.6
