Elimination of HX (X=halogen, hydroxy, acyloxy, ammonium, phosphonium, or sulfonium groups) occurs often as a base-catalyzed process to give alkenes. Depending on the nature of the leaving group X, this reaction proceeds according to an E1, E2, or E1cb mechanism. Electronic and stereoelectronic factors of these transformations are well known (see HoubenWeyl, Vol. 5/1b, pp 1144, 184172).
