As with the dehydrohalogenation of alkenes, a double dehydrohalogenation of alkanes can be employed to generate in situ alkynyllithiums, which can be trapped by trialkyl borates to afford alkynyltrifluoroborates (e.g., 19) after treatment with potassium hydrogen difluoride (Scheme 20).[‌41‌] This approach would appear to be of limited value but is useful in rare cases.
