Since the first cleavage of the exocyclic P—C bond of an 1-aryl-1H-phosphole was described by Braye and co-workers,[86] this route has been used occasionally for the preparation of functionalized 1H-phospholes. Typically, substituted 1-phenyl-1H-phospholes are converted into phospholide ions by reaction with alkali metals, and the formed phospholide ions are then converted into new 1H-phospholes by reaction with an electrophile. Previous procedures for the synthesis of 1H-phospholes, including the recently developed cyclization of enynes,[87] can be used to synthesize the starting 1-aryl-1H-phospholes.
