General Introduction
This is an update to the original Science of Synthesis chapter from 2003 (Section 14.3) on pyranones and pyranthiones.[1] The specific ring systems covered within this class of compounds are 2H-pyran-2-ones (Section 14.3.5.1), 2H-pyran-2-thiones (Section 14.3.5.2), and 4H-pyran-4-ones (Section 14.3.5.3) (Scheme 1). The focus is on reports from the literature that were published between 2000 and 2019; during this time numerous new approaches for preparing and modifying 2H-pyran-2-ones and 4H-pyran-4-ones were disclosed. In contrast, relatively few new methods for the synthesis of 2H-pyran-2-thiones have been reported, and no significant developments for the synthesis of 4H-pyran-4-thione compounds have been reported.
