The alkylation of thiocarboxylic acids (or their thiocarboxylate salts) with alkyl halides, epoxides, or similar compounds is a frequently used method for preparing thiocarboxylic acid S-esters, and a variety of different procedures are documented in Section Recent reports have demonstrated that the thiocarboxylic acid S-ester products can be obtained in high yield under catalyst-free and aqueous conditions.[‌2‌‌4‌] These environmentally friendlier procedures are characterized by the facile isolation of the thiocarboxylic acid S-ester products by either a simple workup or decantation.
