In 2006, Sizov and co-workers developed a method to synthesize polyfluorothioacyl halides via thermal splitting of benzyl polyfluoroalkyl sulfides under the action of phosphorus pentoxide (P2O5), which serves as an acidic splitting agent.[‌3‌] Specifically, this method involves the splitting of benzyl polyfluoroalkyl sulfides which contain an α,α-dihalomethylene group by heating them with 2 or 3 equivalents of phosphorus pentoxide (Scheme 2). Both thioacyl fluorides 3 and chlorides 4 can be obtained in good yields and purities. In contrast to the earlier reported method employing titanium(IV) chloride as activating agent (see Section 22.1.2.1.5), this method exhibits an obvious improvement in yields and ease of handling.
