Difluoromethyl ethers 4 are formed from formates 3 by treatment with phosphorus pentachloride to give dichloromethyl ethers and subsequent chlorine–fluorine exchange (Scheme 2).[‌5‌] The chlorine–fluorine exchange is carried out at room temperature by a solvolysis process using triethylamine trihydrofluoride (Et3N3HF) as the exchange medium, with hydrogen fluoride being the ultimate source of fluorine.
