Whilst the fluorinated systems described for lanthanides (Section 26.8.4.1.1.1.3) are recyclable and offer a convenient method for separation and purification of the aryl ketones formed, a more established method utilizes solid-supported metal catalysts.[‌36‌] One simple support is silica gel which, when mixed with aluminum trichloride in carbon tetrachloride, forms an active catalyst that can be utilized in low molar ratios (0.1:1) to convert a variety of arenes into the corresponding aryl ketones 5 (Scheme 12).[‌37‌]
