Optimized reaction conditions for hypervalent iodine catalyzed oxylactonization consist of the treatment of an oxo carboxylic acid with iodobenzene (10 mol%), 4-toluenesulfonic acid monohydrate (20 mol%), and 3-chloroperoxybenzoic acid as the stoichiometric oxidant in nitromethane solution; a representative example is the cyclization of the oxo carboxylic acid 112 to the oxo lactone 113 (Scheme 59).[‌153‌]
