General Introduction

Reductive coupling may be broadly defined as a synthetic transformation in which two or more π-systems (or, less frequently, one π-system and another reactive coupling partner) are joined by CC bond formation with the aid of a reducing agent. Catalytic versions of such reactions have attracted significant interest for their potential to rapidly increase molecular complexity starting from simple substrates. Additionally, reductive couplings may enable regio- and stereoselective double bond construction and the enantio- and diastereoselective formation of alcohol or amine stereocenters. Moreover, these processes may be coupled to each other in one synthetic step. The vast majority of synthetic protocols for reductive coupling make use of a transition-metal catalyst (Ni, Rh, Co, Ir) and a stoichiometric reducing agent (BEt3, HSiR13, H2).
