General Introduction

Enantioselective and diastereoselective alkene metathesis are powerful methods for stereocontrolled synthesis in that they allow the formation of carboncarbon double bonds under relatively mild reaction conditions. In general, an enantioselective or diastereoselective process normally involves the formation of one or more defined stereocenters during the transformation. In diastereoselective metathesis transformations, the stereocontrolled formation of the resulting double bond is also an active field of research. Enantioselective and diastereoselective processes are now possible in all metathesis related transformations including ring-closing metathesis, ring-opening metathesis, cross metathesis, eneyne metathesis, polymerization reactions, and tandem processes involving one or more of the aforementioned transformations. Consequently, much effort has been devoted to the design of new achiral and chiral molybdenum alkylidenes or ruthenium-based carbenes.[‌1‌‌5‌]
