Aryl aldehydes may be asymmetrically transformed into their corresponding benzoin products employing catalysis by triazolylidene or thiazolylidene carbenes, metallophosphites, and enzymes. To date, there are no efficient methods for the preparation of enantioenriched aliphatic acyloins.
