As in the original protocol,[‌51‌] the Betti reaction between alcoholic ammonia, benzaldehydes, and 2-naphthol gives initially an equilibrating mixture of imine and oxazine tautomeric adducts, containing two aldehyde units. Acidic hydrolysis then leads to formation of the stable hydrochlorides, from which the free bases 30 can be obtained by basification with an aqueous ammonium hydroxide solution (Scheme 34).[‌52‌]
