The palladium-catalyzed synthesis of tetrahydrofurans described in Section can be coupled with subsequent base-mediated decarboxylation to generate polysubstituted furans (Scheme 3).[‌20‌] This reaction also employs catalytic dichlorobis(triphenylphosphine)palladium(II), and potassium tert-butoxide as the base is effective at mediating decarboxylation (which is followed by ethoxide loss) to form furans 2 with high selectivity. A number of aryl iodides and substituted propargyl alcohols can be used in this reaction; however, only one alkene was employed.
