Acid-catalyzed reactions of alkenes with aldehydes are generally referred to as the Prins reaction (Scheme 5). When this reaction is carried out thermally, in the absence of a catalyst, the products are usually those expected from ene reactions, which are discussed in Section 2.5.5.2.2. Depending on the reaction conditions, the major products are 1,3-dioxanes 16, 1,3-glycols 14, or unsaturated alcohols 15 (ene product).[24]
