The Vilsmeier–Haack reaction (also known as just the Vilsmeier reaction) is the reaction of a substituted amide, phosphoryl chloride, and an electron-rich aromatic compound to produce an aromatic aldehyde or ketone. The reaction was first discovered by Vilsmeier and Haack in 1927,[‌12‌] and was further developed by Arnold and co-workers.[‌13‌] The Vilsmeier reaction was initially utilized for the introduction of a formyl group in activated arenes. Subsequent investigations have demonstrated the versatility of the reaction, as it can be efficiently utilized in a variety of processes, such as chlorinations, chloroformylations, aromatizations, and cyclizations.
