The diversity of enzyme types that are capable of promoting sulfoxidation appears to suggest that sulfoxidation is a comparatively facile reaction for some oxidase or oxygenase enzymes in general. For example, mushroom tyrosinase, a copper-containing oxidase that uses catechol as a cosubstrate, can catalyze sulfoxidation once the oxy-form of the enzyme has been generated through reaction with catechol. Enantioselectivity toward methyl phenyl sulfide is modest, producing the (S)-sulfoxide with 85% ee; however, this can be increased to 90% if ascorbic acid is added.[‌107‌]
