A significant range of heterocyclic carboxylic esters 17 are obtained through copper(I)-catalyzed direct carboxylation of aromatic heterocyclic C—H bonds (Scheme 10).[‌22‌] Various substituted benzoxazoles 16 (X = O) afford the corresponding functionalized esters in moderate to good yields. Low yields are obtained when 1-methyl-1H-benzo[d]imidazole (16, X = NMe; R1 = R2 = R3 = H) and 2-phenyl-1,3,4-oxadiazole are employed as substrates. The reaction shows good functional-group tolerance.
